Fritz Klingholz prepared the plans for the station, built from 1904 to 1906. The first train arrived on November 15, 1906. The infobox gives neo-baroque, and the text calls it flamboyant neo-baroque or Baroque Revival. The exterior is red sandstone, the interior yellow sandstone, and a 131-foot (40 m) clock tower stands on the eastern lobby.
A steel-and-glass roof covers the five-span train shed, and a copper dome crowns the former western entrance. Track 11 was removed in 1983. A 25 million euro refurbishment in 2003 and 2004 restored the interior, and a 35 million euro roof renovation began in 2010.
Deutsche Bahn owns it. It is a terminus with about 40,000 daily passengers.
