After the flood of March 1879, residents of Szeged pledged to build a cathedral, on the site of the medieval St. Demeter Church. Frigyes Schulek won a competition of 35 plans. The foundation date is June 21, 1914, though the text also says construction began in 1913. Work stopped during the First World War, and the church was completed and blessed on October 24, 1930. It is mostly brick. The article names no architectural style.

The twin towers are each 299 feet (91 m) high, and the dome is 177 feet (54 m) outside. The church is 167 feet (51 m) wide. The organ has 9,740 pipes, and the Heroes Bell of 1927 weighs 8,537 kilograms. The Dömötör tower beside it is the oldest building in Szeged and the only surviving part of St. Demeter.

It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Szeged-Csanád.
