King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) appropriated land for Dusit Garden after an 1897 trip to Europe. The mansion was built in 1900 by dismantling the Munthatu Rattanaroj Residence at Ko Sichang and reassembling it in the garden. It was inaugurated on March 27, 1901. The article calls it Victorian-Thai, with European neoclassical interiors and Thai motifs.
It is L-shaped, 197 by 66 feet (60 by 20 m), with 72 rooms. Golden teak is the primary material, with brick and cement at ground level. Fretwork decorates the windows and vents. The article names no architect.
The king used it as a royal palace from 1901 to 1906. It became a museum in the 1980s. It closed to visitors on July 21, 2016, and the article says it was disassembled in 2019 to replace its pilings and foundation. Its future status is unclear.
