Duke Ludwig I founded Trausnitz Castle in 1204, and it was completed by 1235 in time for a visit by Emperor Frederick II. The Wittelsbachs used it as the ducal residence for Lower Bavaria from 1255 to 1503. The Knights' Hall, in Cistercian Gothic, dates from the thirteenth century. Duke Louis X furnished the castle in 1516 in a South German Renaissance style.
Friedrich Sustris created the courtyard arcades between 1568 and 1578, for Crown Prince William. The Chamber of Art and Curiosities, arranged in 1579, holds about 750 exhibits.
In the eighteenth century the castle served as a barracks and a prison for noble prisoners. A fire on October 21, 1961, destroyed much of the interior decoration. It is owned by the Bavarian Palace Administration and open to visitors.
