Stubbins Associates and Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo designed the resort for Sheldon Adelson's Las Vegas Sands. Groundbreaking was on April 14, 1997, and it opened to the public at 12:45 a.m. on May 4, 1999, after a private ceremony on May 3. The permanent certificate of occupancy came in June 2001.

The theme is Venice in the 1400s and 1500s, with replicas of the Doge's Palace, the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's Campanile at 315 feet (96 m). Treadway Industries made the landmarks and statues. The original tower has 35 stories and rises 480 feet (146 m), and a 12-story tower was added in 2003.

It opened with 3,036 suites and now has 4,049 rooms. The infobox and text conflict on how it ranks as a hotel. Vici Properties owns it, and Apollo operates it.
