Count Carl von Ahlefeldt acquired the Sorgenfri estate in 1702 and commissioned the first house, designed by François Dieussart and completed in 1705. Only its cellar and foundations survive. Dowager Princess Sophie Caroline of East Frisia demolished it and commissioned the current house, which Lauritz de Thurah built in 1756 and 1757. The infobox lists Baroque, while the text also describes the design as Neoclassical.

Prince Frederick reacquired the property in 1789 and commissioned Peter Meyn to adapt it, with a cupola added in the renovation from 1791 to 1794. Nicolai Abildgaard designed the garden pavilions, including the Swiss House and the Norwegian House. The garden covers 99 acres (40 hectares) and was changed to an English landscape style.

Dowager Queen Caroline Amalie spent her summers there from 1848 to 1881. The park is open to the public.
