Prince Oscar of Sweden and Sophia of Nassau bought the Scanian farm Skabelycke in 1864. The first one-story palace was completed in 1865, and it was expanded to its current size from 1874 to 1876. The article names no architect, style or building materials.

Gustaf Adolf and Margaret received the palace as a wedding gift in 1905 and renovated it. They began the rhododendron garden, which covers 17 hectares, or 42 acres. Gustaf Adolf became king in 1950, and the palace was the royal family's official summer residence until 1973.

Gustaf Adolf died in Helsingborg and left Sofiero to the city. The article implies the city now owns it. It is a public garden and park with a small modern art collection, and it is open to the public.
