The dowager German Empress Victoria, eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, built the castle from 1889 to 1893. She named it Schloss Friedrichshof, in honor of her late husband, Emperor Frederick III. It stands in Kronberg im Taunus, near Frankfurt. The article gives no architect, style or materials.

The Empress died in 1901, and the castle passed to her youngest daughter, Princess Margaret of Prussia. After the Second World War, US military authorities used it as an officers' club. On November 5, 1945, a US captain found the buried family jewels in the subcellar. She and two officers took them from Germany, and only about ten percent were recovered.

A fire damaged the building in 1967. It is now a five-star hotel, and the House of Hesse owns the castle and park.
