Lothar Franz von Schönborn, Prince-Bishop of Bamberg and Archbishop of Mainz, inherited the estate in 1710 and paid for the palace from his personal wealth. Johann Dientzenhofer and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt designed it. Construction began in 1711, and the palace was completed in 1718, with outbuildings finished in 1719. Maximilian von Welsch designed the Marstall, the stables, and the park.

The style is Baroque, in local sandstone with light gray facades and yellow-greenish window frames. The grand staircase runs through three floors, and the article calls it the first of its kind in the Baroque style in Germany.

The park was converted to an English landscape garden beginning in 1786. The palace holds the largest private Baroque art collection in Germany, with over 600 pictures. The Schönborn family still owns it.
