Przemyśl Cathedral, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St. John the Baptist, stands on Cathedral Square in the Old Town of Przemyśl. A wooden cathedral stood on the site from 1375 to 1412, and a stone Ruthenian Orthodox cathedral stood in the courtyard of Przemyśl Castle from 1412 to 1460. Foundations of a thirteenth-century rotunda remain in the chancel.
Construction of the Gothic church began under Bishop Nicholas Błażejowski in 1495 and was completed in the first decades of the sixteenth century. It was built as a fortified church, with walls and a cannon, because of Tatar and Wallachian raids. Only the walls and pillars of the 1495 building survive.
Bishop Aleksander Antoni Fredro ordered a Baroque rebuilding from 1724 to 1744. The roof collapsed in 1733 and was rebuilt. The church has two domed chapels, the Drohojowski chapel of 1578 and the late Baroque Fredro chapel of 1724.
