Niedzica Castle, also called Dunajec Castle, is in Niedzica in Lesser Poland, near the Pieniny mountains and Lake Czorsztyn. Kokos of Brezovica, a Hungarian, built it between 1320 and 1326 on the site of an ancient earthen-walled stronghold. Its style is Gothic.
The castle is a densely packed complex around a courtyard, with residential wings with arcades, towers, fortified walls and surviving dungeons. Historically it served as a Polish-Hungarian border post and a center of relations between the two countries. Its owners included the Zápolya and Salamon families.
It was renovated in the 15th, 16th, 18th and early 19th centuries. The final reconstruction was completed in 1963, and the castle has operated as a historical museum since then.
