Nezu Shrine in Bunkyō, Tokyo, is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Legend says Yamato Takeru founded it in the first century. In 1705 the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, relocated it to Nezu, and his successor Tokugawa Ienobu chose it as his guardian deity. Nothing remains of the structures from before the move.
The main hall, worship hall, offering hall, two-story gate, Chinese-style gate and a 656-foot (200-meter) wall all date from 1706. The buildings follow the ishi-no-ma-zukuri style and are modeled on Tōshō-gū in Nikkō. Several buildings are Important Cultural Properties.
A path of vermilion torii climbs the hillside, with a viewing platform over a koi pond. The azalea festival runs from early April to early May. It is one of the Tokyo Ten Shrines. There is no admission fee.
