Napoli Afragola is a high-speed railway station in Afragola, near Naples, nicknamed the Gateway to the South. Zaha Hadid Architects was commissioned in 2003, and Hadid presented the design that November. The developer was Rete Ferroviaria Italiana. The construction contract was awarded to Astaldi in 2015, and the station was inaugurated on 6 June 2017.
The station is a four-level, bridge-like building up to 82 feet (25 meters) tall, with a concourse of 20,000 square meters. The exterior has glass panels in winding shapes, and the glazed roof has shading and natural ventilation. It uses ground-water cooling. The building is divided into sections under 164 feet (50 meters) long to withstand earthquakes.
It serves four high-speed lines and has a bus station and 1,400 parking spaces. It is projected to carry about 10,000 passengers a day.
