The Marktkirche stands beside the market place in Hanover. It is a Lutheran church, formerly Roman Catholic. A predecessor church existed by 1125 and was named St. Georgii by 1238. The present church was begun in 1347 and completed in 1366. It is a Northern German Brick Gothic hall church with two aisles, 61.5 meters long and 26.6 meters wide, with a monumental saddleback roof.
The western tower is one of the highest in Lower Saxony. The linden-wood main altar was carved around 1480, with scenes of the Passion on the front and saints on the back. The church has eleven bells, including the Christus- und Friedensglocke, the largest bell in Lower Saxony.
An air raid in 1943 damaged it, and the roof and naves were restored in 1952. The organ was rebuilt from 2007 to 2009.
