Marko's Monastery is in the village of Markova Sušica, about 11 miles (18 kilometers) from central Skopje. It is named for Prince Marko, and it was founded by his father, King Vukašin Mrnjavčević. Construction of the Church of Saint Demetrius began in 1346, and the church and its paintings were finished about thirty years later.

The church is a single cross-shaped building of brick and stone, with a central dome and a smaller dome on the western side. Its frescoes were painted by several regional artists. In 1830 an exonarthex was added.

When Skopje fell to the Ottomans in 1392, many nearby churches were destroyed, but this monastery suffered almost no damage. In 1894 the frescoes of Vukašin and Marko were heavily overpainted. It is an active monastery today and is open to the public.
