The Janáček Theatre stands at Rooseveltova 31 in Brno and is the largest of the three theaters used by the National Theatre Brno, with the Mahen and Reduta theaters. Construction began in 1960, and it opened in October 1965. A major renovation was completed in 2018.
Seven architectural competitions were held for it between 1910 and 1957. About 150 architects took part, including Bohuslav Fuchs, Josef Gočár, Vlastislav Hofman, Josef Chochol, Pavel Janák and Jan Kotěra. The competition designs ranged from historicism and Art Nouveau to Cubism, Functionalism and Socialist realism.
The north-facing facade is oriented toward the house of the composer Leoš Janáček, who is memorialized on the adjacent green. It is the youngest of the National Theatre's buildings in Brno. It has premiered about 20 operas and ballets since it opened.
