Graz Hauptbahnhof stands on Europaplatz, about 1 mile (2 kilometers) west of the city center. The first station opened in 1847, and a larger one was built on the same site from 1871 to 1876. Allied bombing destroyed it in 1945.

The present station was completed in 1956 to a design by Wilhelm Aduatz. It was built in the typical style of the 1950s, and the main ticket hall is a listed building. The station was modernized in 2001, when platform escalators and a small shopping mall were added.

Since 2010 the station has been adapted as an international transport hub. The platforms were rebuilt and lengthened, and a new underground tram stop serves four tram lines. It is the most frequented railway station in Austria outside Vienna.
