The Government Palace stands at Snellmaninkatu 1 A in Helsinki and is a Neoclassical building by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel. It was formerly known as the Senate House, or Senaatintalo in Finnish. Engel made the original sketch between 1812 and 1819, construction began in 1818, and the building was completed in 1822.
Senate Properties owns the palace, and it houses the Finnish Government. Between 1909 and 1917 it was the seat of the Grand Duchy of Finland's government, known as the Admirals' Senate. A photograph from 1915 shows that government gathered around its table, with Franz Albert Seyn and Mikhail Borovitinov seated at opposite ends.
An aerial photograph of the palace from the 1960s also survives.
