Duino Castle is a 14th-century fortification in the village of Duino, near Trieste, Italy, on cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. Construction began in 1389 under the Wallsee family. Ruins of an 11th-century castle built by the Patriarch of Aquileia remain on the grounds.
In the late 19th century the castle became the property of Prince Alexander von Thurn und Taxis, whose wife, Princess Marie, hosted the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. In 1912 Rilke began writing his Duino Elegies there. After World War II the castle served as headquarters of the British XIII Corps.
Today most of the castle and the grounds are open as a museum and park. Parts have housed the United World College of the Adriatic since 1982. The Thurn und Taxis family still owns the castle.
