The Church of San Antón stands in the Old Town of Bilbao beside the estuary and is dedicated to Anthony the Great. An earlier church was consecrated in 1433, and an enlargement began in 1478. The Lezama-Leguizamón family founded the Chapel of Provost, built in 1530, and the Renaissance facade was completed in 1548. Gabriel de Capelastegui began the present Baroque belfry in 1774.

The church combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. It has rib vaults, pointed arches and a Renaissance facade with Corinthian columns. Enrique Epalza designed the portico and the frontages facing the bridge in 1902.

The church was closed twice, once in the Carlist war and again in 1881 because of its poor condition, and Sabino Goikoetxea led a restoration afterward. Floods of the Nervión river repeatedly damaged it, including in 1983. It became a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1984.
