The Church of Christ the Saviour stands on the former campus of the pre-war University of Pristina, in Kosovo. The Albanian architect Bashkim Fehmiu first planned the site in 1973 as an open campus, intended as a symbol of knowledge dissemination. Ljubiša Folić designed a new site plan in the early 1990s, and the design by the Serbian architect Spasoje Krunić of 1991 was chosen for the church.
The Serbian Orthodox Church began construction in 1992. Work resumed in March 1995 after funding stalled, and the outer structure was complete by 1998. The church was planned with 1,389 golden crosses, a reference to the Battle of Kosovo.
Construction was suspended after the Kosovo War because of security concerns. The building has been vandalized and was set on fire in 2016. Ownership of the land is disputed between the university and the Serbian Orthodox Church.
