The Château de Sedan sits on a headland in Sedan, in the Ardennes department of France, between the Bièvre and Vra rivers. It covers about 35,000 square meters and is described as a grand fortress of medieval European stock.
Eberhard II von der Mark began a manor with two towers around 1424. His successors Jean and Robert II de la Marck strengthened it. In 1530 a circular boulevard and cannon terraces were added. Vauban designed the Door of the Princes in 1699, after France absorbed the principality in 1642.
Prussian forces surrounded the castle in 1870. The French Army gave it to the town of Sedan in 1962. It now houses the tourism office, a four-star hotel and a museum with a room on the war of 1870.
