The Château de Saché stands in Saché, in the Indre-et-Loire department of France. It is a writer's house museum set in a home built from the converted remains of a feudal castle. It was built on the foundations of a 12th-century fortified house, and a cylindrical tower and dry moats from that earlier structure remain. The building was transformed between the 16th and 18th centuries.
The owner, Jean de Margonne, was a friend of Honoré de Balzac. Between 1830 and 1837 Balzac wrote many of the novels of La Comédie Humaine here. He reportedly wrote 14 to 16 hours a day, fueled by large amounts of coffee.
The French Ministry of Culture has listed the château as a monument historique since June 1983. It has been a Balzac museum since 1951, and his small second-floor bedroom holds a simple bed and writing desk.
