The Almeida Theatre is a 325-seat producing house on Almeida Street, off Upper Street, in the London Borough of Islington. The architects Robert Lewis Roumieu and Alexander Dick Gough designed the building, which was constructed in 1837 for the Islington Literary and Scientific Society. It held a library, a reading room, a museum, a laboratory and a lecture theater of 500 seats.
Later uses included a club, a Salvation Army barracks and a factory. The building was Grade II listed in 1972. Pierre Audi led the campaign to convert it into a theater, which opened in 1980.
A restoration by Burrell Foley Fischer reopened it in May 2003. The theater stages short seasons of drama, and successful productions often transfer to West End theaters.
